Domains

A Domain Name is the unique address that is typed into the browser to navigate to your website i.e. www.anoetic.co.za.

Depending on the location of the people that you will want to attract to your website, different endings (eg .co.za for South Africa) can be chosen. We can help you choose the most appropriate web site address / domain, see if it is available and register it for you in your personal or business name.

There are a huge variety of different types of domains that can be registered.  It gets very complicated with technical terms TLD, gTLD, SLD and so forth.

In summary, there are two parts to a domain name – the first part is the actual name, and the second is to choose the domain extension, as explained on our domains page.

Registration

Domain name registration is the act of reserving a name on the Internet for a certain period, usually one year. It is important to know that this domain will remain yours for as long as you renew it and pay for the renewal. Domain name registration is necessary for a website, an email or another web service.

Its easy – register a new domain through our portal. Just follow these easy-to-follow steps:

  1. Decide on the desired domain name and hoose the domain extension (eg co.za)
  2. See our domains page for possible options and use our search tool to see if both the name and extension are available
  3. Add your domain to your order cart
  4. Review the products you have added to your Order cart
  5. Checkout your order cart
  6. Pay via PayPal, PayFast, or EFT

We will do the rest!

What takes time is deciding on the correct name. But once you have decided on the name, and checked that the domain name and extension you desire is available, the actual domain registration could be completed within minutes.

Conditions are : the domain is available, the domain registration fee is paid  and the registration form is filled out correctly. This applies to all types of domains.

Once the domain has been registered successfully at the Central Domain Registry, every server in the world will then one by one be notified that the domain has been registered.

This process is called “dns propagation” and can take anything from 2 hours to 48 hours for the domain records to propagate throughout the internet and the domain to be made accessible and visible via the internet.

Renewal

Yes, a domain is registered and paid for the first year and needs to be renewed and paid for annually thereafter before its anniversary date, otherwise it will expire and be marked for deletion.

All domain names registered are required to be renewed annually on its anniversary date.

We send out invoices and reminders the month before the domain’s anniversary date requesting payment for renewal for another year. Should you not pay for the renewal of your domain or advise us that you wish to renew the domain for another year, the domain will be set to expire and will commence the deletion process.

Once the domain has completed its redemption phase, it is officially marked as expired and it is NOT possible to renew the domain.

A domain will be set for deletion on its anniversary date.

The process for the deletion of a .za domain is as follows:

  • an initial 5 days suspension
  • deletion phase another 5 days
  • final closed redemption phase 20 days

It will be available for renewal within this initial 10 days grace period only. During this period no additional fees apply for recovering the domain name and you may renew the domain name by contacting our support team directly.

Once the domain has completed its redemption phase, it is not possible to renew the domain, and it will be made available to the public domain again. The Domain Registration process needs to be completed to register the domain again, if it has not been snatched up by someone else on expiry date

NOTE: Other domain types have different redemption times. It’s best not to leave the domain’s renewal to the anniversary date for these reasons specifically.  We send out renewal invoices the month before the anniversary date.

Transfer

Yes you can. We can handle and manage any domain transfer for you.

Just get in contact with us for this, as there are technical requirements and information that we need to obtain from you in order to be able to do behind-the-scenes transfers tasks. Some domains are also not allowed to be transferred during their registration or renewal phase (these differ accordingly).

To transfer your domain name to another Domain company it should first meet several criteria:

  • The domain name must be in “Active” status. Most domain name registrars by default set the status of the domain names to “Locked“, so you need to unlock the domain name first from the control panel of the current registrar.
  • There must be more than 15 days until the expiration of the domain name.
  • The domain name must have been initially registered more than 60 days ago
  • You must have the EPP code for the domain name. This is used during the transfer to authorize the operation and you can obtain it from the current domain name registrar.

If you are unsure of how to go about doing all this, we can assist and manage the whole process for you. Please get in contact with us.

The EPP key (Authorization code) is one of the safeguards against unauthorized transfers of domain name registrations and it protects your rights as a domain owner. The EPP key is required to initiate the transfer of most domain names from one Registrar to another. It is not possible to initiate a

You can request that the EPP key code that is needed for domain transfer is sent to you. The code will be sent to the administrative email related with your domain name. Please note that EPP codes are case sensitive.

Your domain name should also meet all domain name transfer requirements before it can be transferred to us. Please contact us should you have any queries.

If the EPP key provided was correct, then the transfer will immediately be initiated. If the EPP was incorrect, you will receive an email on the account’s administrative email address that should be used to confirm the domain transfer.

The transfer request could also require the domain owner’s authorisation. If the transfer request is approved by the current owner, the transfer will proceed. Should approval not be obtained within a specific period as defined by the current Registrar, the domain transfer will be cancelled and the transfer process will need to commence again.

Depending on the type of domain name and its current registrar, the domain name transfer service could be immediate in the case of .za domains, or can take up to 5-14 days to complete properly.

Websites & Hosting

HTML is the basic programming language that is used to dictate how a web page is to be laid out, the content items that it has to hold, where they are placed and how they are presented. It can be used in conjunction with css which is a content styling code. HTML 5 is the current version being used, and proper use of this allows for mobile friendly websites. A “look and feel” (the look of the site) needs to be designed by a web designer, and the then the HTML coder, has to cut it up and programme it in HTML with css to put it together in an HTML website.

A Content Management System (CMS) separates the different parts of a website (content , design, functionality) and thus allows for easier website management. Text content is stored in the database, images are stored in a library, the design layout is configured in a theme and the functionality to put all of this together into a website is coded in a programming language like PHP, python etc. When using a CMS application, responsibilities of managing different parts of your website can be assigned to different people. For example, non-technical people can be responsible for the site’s content, while more technical people can work on the site’s design and functionality.  Most CMS applications have built-in tools which will take care of most tasks for you. This way changing your site’s design or adding a blog, for example, can be done in a matter of minutes. And the best of all, you don’t need any programming skills in order to use a CMS and create a beautiful website.

We can install and host most CMS platforms.

The most popular one is WordPress, but we can install Joomla, Drupal, Magento, Prestashop and Django.

Yes you can. At any time.

Just let us know and we can install a copy of your desired CMS platform on your domain’s hosting space. The HTML website will need to be redone in the CMS platform, or you can start a brand new website from scratch. We can provide these web development services to you, as you require.

Yes ! We can even help you with this. Please see our Website hosting packages

We will however need full access to your current environment: Back-end, Front-end, FTP and CPanel / Konsole access. Please contact us for more information. Transfers of websites to us as free of charge.

Yes we can. Maintenance comes in various forms :

  • Content (text and images) updates
  • Search engine optimisation and keywords
  • CMS core and plugin updates
  • Backups
  • Security Updates

Just let us know what you require and we can provide pricingaccordingly.

All of the servers are especially optimized for WordPress websites.

Because of this, WordPress websites should load faster, while also being more stable and secure than those hosted on generic web servers.  To help to improve the speed of your website, we have WordPress Special Caching features (proprietary SuperCacher technology) in place that aims to increase the number of hits a site can handle at the same time, while also boosting overall speed.

We also ensure the installation and setup of WP security and a Firewall on your WordPress website to ensure minimum security levels are maintained.

Email Accounts

You can have as many email accounts as you require. There are no limits.

We provide you with 1 free email account when you register or transfer your domain to us, and there is a minimal fee per month per email address (email account) thereafter.

No, there are not any specific limits on any of the email accounts.

However, your hosting space (which includes your website and your email accounts) has a limit. Should your space on our server be reaching its maximum limit, you can always add extra space to your hosting for a minimal fee per month.

These are types of mail sending and receiving protocols that the mail program uses to communicate with the email server.

  • POP is for receiving emails
  • SMTP is for sending emails
  • Imap is for syncing emails between devices.

Webmail is the interface that has been created for you to access your email box in a web based browser. Like Gmail, but for your own email accounts. Your webmail facility is a direct access to your mail boxes on our server and can be accessed via a link off your domain.

You can see your emails anytime, anywhere, as long as you have internet and a web browser.

Website Security

Internet security is quite a wide term, so we have separated it into a 3 prong approach for ease of understanding:

  • Our side of things ie: Server security – where all your files, emails, hosting sits – this needs to be secure -in addition to this your domain (as a door to your files) also needs to be secure
  • Your side of things ie: your desktop, your office, your nework, your devices – because you are not a security wizard, there is software available that does all the security and protection that you need for yourself in your own home / office.
  • The products and services on your hosting space ie: website, emails etc – these can have vulnerabilities, so ensuring that your website is also secured is vitally important.

Review our Internet Security Page for more information on these three aspects and how these can improve your security and protect you and your assets against hacking and phishing attempts.

SSL Certificates

SSL certificates became an absolute necessity in the hosting industry nowadays. There are three major benefits of using an SSL certificate:

  • Encryption of sensitive data like credit card numbers and personal information.
  • Consumer confidence. Your website visitors will know that their data is protected by a secure connection, and your website is vouched for by a trusted Certificate Authority.
  • Your Search Engine Results ranking is improved as your site is seen as a secure and trusted entity

We can supply all brands of SLL certificates, and they come in 3 types:

  • Basic Single Domain (SD) certificate
  • Wildcard certificate
  • Premium Extended Validation (EV) certificate

Please review our SSL certificate page that explains each of these in further detail

Yes we can and usually do for all our clients. All you need to do is advise on the type of SSL certificate you need, and you can leave the rest up to us.

http is an unsecured connection to your website. https is the secure connection to your website and hosting services. Any website that has https or a padlock showing next to the domain name in the browser has an SSL certificate installed, and is therefore protected and secure.

See our SSL certificate page for more information on the types of certificates and the benefits of installing it on your domain.

NOTE: all e-commerce sites should be operating on https with an SSL certificate to ensure the data and credit card information is proetected

Antivirus Software

We put in a lot of effort into ensuring the servers and your domain is protected on our side. But your PC, home office or work network, is not accessible to us. It is usually these places that are soft targets for hackers and phishing opportunities. Malware and trojans are mostly activated on personal computers or shared among friends unknowingly in email attachments or on shared flashdrives.  Ever see something weird going on with your pc or emails? This is most likely a virus, trojan or malware.

Antivirus software protects your pc and any other device from these potential technologically fatal attacks. Keeping your PC, your data and your reputation safe and secure.

It depends on the set up you have, how many devices you have, and the extent of security you need.

We have multiple options available – have a look at our Antivirus Software page to see some of the options.

You can install antivirus software on any internet connected device, this includes smart phones and smart tv’s.  Have a look at our antivirus software page for more information

Website Security

Just like saving work when you’re writing a paper, or preparing an important report for work, it is important to save copies of your website. As it’s called in the tech world, you always want to have a “backup.” Backing up, plain and simple, is saving a duplicate version of all your work. This includes your website pages, pdfs, images, and  if you have a WordPress website, the theme and related site files (like plugins) as well as your database (which includes posts, users, comments, etc.).

Backing up of your website is similar to how you might save an important document to your Google Drive or Dropbox and to your desktop. It’s always wise to save important items more than once and in more than one place, or “medium” (like an external hard drive, thumb drive, the “cloud”, on your computer, and so forth.) Your website is no exception.

Having a plan in place to back-up your site is absolutely critical for anyone and everyone who has a website – from the least-techie beginners to full-stack lead developers.

Yes we can. We just need access to your website and to a location to save your backups to – eg Dropbox, Google Drive etc. We also need to know how often your content on your website changes, so that we can set up the right backup frequency for your website.

There a quite a few aspects that influence security of a website. CMS websites are specifically vulnerable to attacks if the correct security measures and firewalls have not been put in place.

  • Install an SSL certificate on your domain and therefore on your website.
  • Login details need to be secure and should not be provided to everyone
  • Should more than one person be working on your website, make sure they have their own set of user login details that can be monitored and changed / revoked if need be
  • Keep your website up to date with the latest versions of the software, security updates and software updates
  • Make sure passwords are not easy to guess and are secure in their format eg: Capital, lowercase, numbers and special characters in different places.
  • Make sure you do not save to your hosting, email, ftp or website access details in your browser or on a device that is not behind a firewall. Keep a physical book (in a safe place not in your desk or handbag) with all your passwords in it, especially if you make your passwords extra secure and therefore not easy to remember.

if you are concerned about your website contact us, and we can do a security assessment for you, identifying where potential issues are and can recommend tasks for you to undertake, or upgrade your security on your website for you.

See our internet security page for more information on our website security services.

http is an unsecured connection to your website. https is the secure connection to your website and hosting services. Any website that has https or a padlock showing next to the domain name in the browser has an SSL certificate installed, and is therefore protected and secure.

See our SSL certificate page for more information on the types of certificates and the benefits of installing it on your domain.
